Postoperative / After The operation
Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery for gallstones, chronic cholecystitis, gallbladder polyps, biliary dyskinesia is done as outpatient. Laparoscopic liver cyst surgery, laparoscopic liver biopsy, laparoscopic liver ablation are also within the outpatient surgery category.
Minimally invasive robotic liver resection, open liver resection repeat liver surgery, bile duct cancer surgery, and gallbladder cancer surgery require an admission to the hospital.
An abdominal drain is placed routinely in patients who undergo robotic and open biliary tract cancer surgery, major extended liver surgery requiring resection of biliary duct, extensive bile duct stone removal surgery, and liver/ bile duct operation requiring biliary reconstruction with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy ( creating a connection between the bile duct in the small-bowel). The output from the abdominal drain is monitored daily for any evidence of bile leakage. It is very important to make sure that the drain has a secure connection to a suction bulb.
